Keizer, Oregon – August 29, 2017
The Lady Celts opened their 2017 campaign with a win at home over Woodburn.
McNary Celts began the 2017 season with ten upperclassmen and 10 underclassmen battling for starting jobs on varsity. The Celts controlled the majority of the possession in the opening half, but struggled to finish against a well-organized and disciplined Woodburn defense. McNary was flagged 9 times for off-sides in the first half due to a disciplined Woodburn backline. In the 25’ minute junior Katy Wyatt connected with a header from a corner kick driven to the back post by junior Gina Munguia that glanced off the top of the cross bar. Just three minutes later in the 28’ minute, strong pressure by sophomore forward Haley Hughes created a turnover deep in the Woodburn end that was gathered by junior Abigail Hawley who served the ball across the box to Katy Wyatt for the finish. McNary took a 1-0 lead into the half.
In the second half McNary kept up great team pressure, and again controlled the majority of the possession. In the 55′ Sophomore Julie Dieker had a strong header off a corner kick from Gina Munguia that forced a save from the Woodburn Keeper. Woodburn threatened on a few counter attacks, but the McNary defense was up to the challenge. Both teams kept great intensity for the entire 80 minutes and battled up to the final whistle. The Celts frontline forced a couple great saves by the Woodburn keeper who kept the scoreline close, and McNary held onto the win.
The final score of the match was McNary 1, Woodburn 0.
The final score of the Junior Varsity match earlier today was McNary 3, Woodburn 0.
The next game for the Celts is at Home on Thursday, August 31 at 3:00pm vs South Albany.
